Rain and high winds moved across north Georgia Wednesday evening, and one person was reported killed when a tree fell on an SUV. At least five others have been killed in other Southeast states and dozens more injured.

The Bahamas are under a hurricane warning as Irene continues to move towards the northwest. The storm is expected to make landfall within the U.S. on Saturday afternoon. In addition, Hurricane Irene is forecasted to hit New England early next week.

National Weather Service forecasters say potentially strong thunderstorms could move over Georgia as temperatures were expected to remain very high. Authorities issued a heat advisory which runs through Tuesday evening, and includes much of southern and eastern parts of Georgia including the cities of Americus, Brunswick, Macon, Savannah, Vidalia and Waycross.
