The Georgia Department of Transportation is getting to work on $113 million in new road improvement projects statewide. The biggest project is a $56 million job to resurface 30 miles Interstate 16 between Laurens and Treutlen counties.

Some of Georgia's largest companies are lobbying state and federal officials to raise weight limits on highways in the states, a move they say will help the economy and the environment. State officials worry about safety and maintenance issues if heavier trucks are allowed on Georgia roads.

Georgia has the nation’s ninth best road system according to a report released Thursday. The annual study by Reason Foundation compares state’s Interstate highways and roads in a range of categories. It’s the second year in a row the state placed ninth. Georgia was fourth overall in 2000 but has fallen in the rankings ever since.
