The Georgia Theater in Athens is planning a benefit to pay back a preservation group that helped the landmark concert venue recover after a devastating fire. Proceeds from the Jan. 12 concert will go to the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.
The Georgia Theatre in Athens has been a fixture of Georgia music for decades. Thousands of acts ranging from The Dave Matthews Band to The Ramones have graced the stage. But in 2009 a fire reduced the building to little more than a smoldering shell. Now, after years of fundraising and renovation the venue will once again open its doors tonight.
