Governor Nathan Deal has extended the winter storm state of emergency through Sunday night. Thursday, the governor extended the state of emergency for two additional days in order to assure all necessary resources are available for state agencies and local governments to clear roads and any additional storm-related obstacles. In a statement released Thursday evening, Deal says he has directed state government employees to report to their workplaces at regular hours on Friday, unless doing so puts them in harm’s way.

Gov. Nathan Deal’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2015 contains a surprising health care item: $13 million to fund air ambulance service in 14 southwest Georgia counties. If the funding is approved by the General Assembly, it will the first time the state has ever operated an ambulance service — either by air or by ground.

The Georgia State Patrol says that traffic accidents during the Labor Day holiday travel period resulted in 14 deaths across the state. Authorities said state troopers arrested more than 225 drivers on charges of driving under the influence.

Authorities say more than 10 percent of the sworn officers with the Georgia Department of Public Safety are off the job until administrative glitches involving their certification can be worked out. State officials say 121 Georgia State Patrol troopers, Capitol Police, and motor division compliance officers are affected.

The Georgia State Patrol is set to honor the first state trooper to die in the line of duty with a memorial in Macon. Officials say Georgia State Trooper Sgt. William Frederick Black Jr. is being honored with a memorial Wednesday at the Interstate 16 and Ocmulgee East Boulevard interchange in Macon.

One westbound lane of Interstate 16 remained closed early Thursday, a day after 27 cars and trucks collided in a fiery pileup. Georgia Department of Transportation officials said the right, westbound lane is expected to be closed until noon Thursday. The chain-reaction accidents around 8:10 a.m. Wednesday killed four people and sent nine others to a hospital.
