One westbound lane of Interstate 16 remained closed early Thursday, a day after 27 cars and trucks collided in a fiery pileup. Georgia Department of Transportation officials said the right, westbound lane is expected to be closed until noon Thursday. The chain-reaction accidents around 8:10 a.m. Wednesday killed four people and sent nine others to a hospital.

Authorities said Tuesday 10 people died in traffic crashes across Georgia during the 78-hour Labor Day holiday travel period. The Georgia State Patrol said the 10 people died in eight fatal crashes.

A state audit shows that the Georgia State Patrol has too many posts and too few troopers on the road when they're needed most. Patrol officials say they are taking another look at staffing because of the audit but limited state funding has left them unable to pay for employees 24 hours a day.

161 federal, state and local law enforcement officers have died on duty this year, representing more than a 30 percent jump over 2009. In Georgia, there have been eight. On Monday night, 38-year-old State Patrol officer Chadwick LeCroy was killed after trying to pull a suspect over on a traffic violation in metro Atlanta.
