A Florida-based airline is delaying its plan to begin flying travelers between Middle Georgia and Atlanta. The reasons behind the delay are not yet clear. In the meantime, GeorgiaSkies will continue flying passengers between Macon and Atlanta until Dec. 22 or longer.

Federal officials have awarded a two-year subsidy to Oregon-based SeaPort Airlines to provide passenger flights from Athens to Nashville, Tenn. U.S. Department of Transportation officials announced the decision to award the money from the Essential Air Service program.

A new airline will begin providing passenger flights from Macon to Atlanta later this year. Sun Air International plans to begin service from Macon to Atlanta on Dec. 1.

A small airport that only has passenger flights from Macon to Atlanta may lose federal subsidies after ticket sales lagged last year. Georgia Skies flew less than 3,000 passengers between the cities in 2009 from Middle Georgia Regional Airport. Now, federal Department of Transportation officials are considering lowering the $466-per-passenger subsidy or doing away with it altogether, which would eliminate passenger air travel from Macon altogether.
