A bill that would allow the state to get a better handle on video poker machines moved one step closer to becoming law Thursday. The vote followed a spirited three-hour debate in the state Senate that revealed ambivalence about permitting the machines in Georgia.

A spokeswoman for the Georgia Lottery Corp. says president and CEO Margaret DeFrancisco will be stepping down. Tandi Reddick said DeFrancisco notified the lottery's governing board Wednesday that she plans to retire. Reddick said DeFrancisco has not set a departure date.
