Georgia could generate about $1 billion a year by legalizing three casinos. That's the conclusion of a report the Georgia lottery quietly gave Governor Nathan Deal last week. The lottery's board paid for the study. It looked at how much Georgia stood to gain by licensing casinos in Atlanta, Savannah and Jekyll Island.

The Georgia Lottery Corporation anticipates a $30 to 40 million dollar revenue drop from last year, but its affect on education won’t be known for another two weeks. Last year's lottery yielded lower revenues as well, but provided additional funds than the year prior.

The HOPE scholarship program is in danger of going broke. Lawmakers are looking for fixes including ways to get more money to come into the lottery-funded aid that helps students go to college.
