House Speaker David Ralston gaveled out the 2012 session of the Georgia General Assembly Thursday at midnight. State lawmakers tackled some thorny issues this session, including tax reform. But the volume of bills was much lower than last year, as many lawmakers were eager to finish up early so they could hit the campaign trail.

A coastal lawmaker says, Georgia is losing business from boaters who want to take up floating residences in the state. Woodbine Republican Jason Spencer introduced a bill in the state legislature to allow live-aboard boats. Georgia outlawed long-term boat stays 20 years ago out of concern for the human waste that some boaters dump in the water.

Georgia ports officials are asking state lawmakers for $46 million for Savannah harbor deepening in the upcoming legislative session. But it's not the only item they'll be following. Georgia Ports Authority also is interested in the results of a year-long initiative to re-write laws affecting businesses.

Savannah business leaders have made support for a little-known state agency one of their legislative priorities for the next legislative session. A $1.3 million project for Herty Advanced Materials Development Center was the area's only specific funding request this year aside from Savannah harbor expansion. The agency is a high-tech research firm helping materials manufacturers.

Georgia legislators won't get be getting a raise next year. In a unanimous decision, the Legislative Services Committee voted on Monday to freeze the cost-of-living adjustment for the third straight year. Members of the General Assembly earn $17,341.68. Georgia has a part-time Legislature that holds a 40-day session each year.

A proposed law would require people receiving TANF benefits be drug tested. Applicants would have to pay for the screening. Money would be refunded to drug free but not those who test positive.

State Republicans handling redistricting rejected alternative district maps presented by Democrats late Tuesday. That's even though the Democratic maps would have kept Republican strongholds. Instead the House GOP passed its own redistricting plan which now heads to the full House for a vote.

The President of Georgia Health Sciences University in Augusta wants lawmakers to put the institution’s funding for cancer research back into the state budget. The university chief says without state support Georgia could lose the fight against the disease.
