    New rules for dogs on St. Simons Island are drawing both cheers and jeers from dog lovers. On the one hand, Glynn County officials are banning dogs on the island's beach this summer when the sand is most popular, during the day. On the other hand, they're giving dog owners the discretion to unleash their dogs and let them roam free in the mornings and evenings.

    Lake Lanier isn't as high as it was this time last year, but it is steadily rising as tourists begin returning for its busy spring and summer seasons. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says Lake Lanier has rebounded to 1,065.51 feet above sea level, and is expected to climb to 1,066.80 feet by April 21.

    Georgia Wildlife Rescue Association is planning to open three regional wildlife rescue centers. Organization says there are not enough trained rehabilitators. Spring and Summer are busiest time for animal rescues.

    A coastal lawmaker says, Georgia is losing business from boaters who want to take up floating residences in the state. Woodbine Republican Jason Spencer introduced a bill in the state legislature to allow live-aboard boats. Georgia outlawed long-term boat stays 20 years ago out of concern for the human waste that some boaters dump in the water.

    The DNR voted to limit the harvest of freshwater turtles. Prior to the vote Georgia had no rules governing how many trappers can take. Chinese demand has some scientists worried.

    DNR Board will vote later this month on increased protection for freshwater turtles. Exporting of turtles will be limited. Right now trappers can take unlimited numbers.

    An outgoing member of Georgia's Department of Natural Resources board is taking aim at Governor Nathan Deal. Deal chose not to re-appoint Newnan insurance agent Warren Budd to another term on the board overseeing environmental protection. Budd says, insiders told him it's because he's in synch with environmental groups on some issues.

    Right now trappers can remove unlimited freshwater turtles from Georgia waterways. Many are shipped live to Asia. New rules will limit those numbers.

    Authorities say construction on what will be Georgia's newest state park at Lake Lanier has been delayed. Georgia Department of Natural Resources officials tell The Times of Gainesville that construction on Don Carter State Park may not begin until 2012. Construction was originally set to begin in November and end in spring 2013.

    The state put hundreds of thousands of fish into the Ogeechee River this week in southwest Georgia. The move follows a major fish kill last spring, but some worry the restocking is premature.
