Officials introduced new director Ronald Brawner and two assistants during a recent news conference at the facility.

    State crime officials say the 1974 disappearance and slaying of a Georgia girl has been solved after investigators say DNA and other clues point to a serial killer. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation declared the case solved in a Wednesday statement, saying they developed evidence to support the likelihood that serial killer Paul John Knowles killed 13-year-old Ima Jean Sanders.

    The Georgia State Patrol has again cleared Arcade's police department of an accusation that the city runs a speed trap along U.S. Highway 129. The State Patrol, which regulates radar use by police departments, has investigated allegations that Arcade is operating a speed trap four times since the late 1990s. Investigators have never found any illegal practices.

    Governor Nathan Deal announced a statewide crackdown on Internet gambling Thursday. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation estimated there are 50 to 100 gambling businesses in the state disguised as Internet cafes. Deal has directed the GBI and district attorneys to go after the cafes.

    An analysis of autopsy data by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation showed a 10 percent increase in the number of deaths where a prescription-drug overdose was the cause. More than 700 people died from overdoses in 2010, and three-quarters of those were the result of prescription drugs, mostly narcotic pain relievers.
