The National Conference of State Legislatures is predicting half or more of state lawmakers around the country will have little experience after this fall’s elections. Georgia no doubt will see some new faces under the Gold Dome next year. But the turnover and loss of institutional knowledge will likely be more modest in Georgia.

A coastal lawmaker says, Georgia is losing business from boaters who want to take up floating residences in the state. Woodbine Republican Jason Spencer introduced a bill in the state legislature to allow live-aboard boats. Georgia outlawed long-term boat stays 20 years ago out of concern for the human waste that some boaters dump in the water.

Georgia ports officials are asking state lawmakers for $46 million for Savannah harbor deepening in the upcoming legislative session. But it's not the only item they'll be following. Georgia Ports Authority also is interested in the results of a year-long initiative to re-write laws affecting businesses.

Savannah business leaders have made support for a little-known state agency one of their legislative priorities for the next legislative session. A $1.3 million project for Herty Advanced Materials Development Center was the area's only specific funding request this year aside from Savannah harbor expansion. The agency is a high-tech research firm helping materials manufacturers.

Emory Dunahoo Jr. has won a runoff election for a seat in the Georgia House representing a district in Hall County. Newnan businessman Mike Crane will take his seat in the state Senate after winning the District 28 runoff. And in Senate District 50, John Wilkinson captured 58 percent of the vote to win his runoff against Rick Austin.

A Metro Atlanta state lawmaker is resigning. State Representative Len Walker says, he plans to submit his resignation to Governor Nathan Deal in 10 days. He'll become senior chaplain at a church in North Georgia's Pickens County. The Gwinnett County Republican has served in the legislature for 17 years.
