Burke County traveled to Gainesville and burst the Red Elephants’ bubble with a 63-28 romp in a Class AAA semifinal Friday night. Fresh of an upset of defending champion Sandy Creek, Gainesville was not ready for the Bears’ rushing attack.

Terrell Cason’s two touchdown runs propelled visiting Cairo to a 21-0 victory over St. Pius in the Class AAA quarterfinals. The Syrupmakers (11-2) will make their first semifinals appearance since winning the state title in 2008.

A new labor report shows no other metro area lost more jobs in the nation than Atlanta over the past year—nearly 31,000. And while other metro areas in the state also took hits, a handful of others gained jobs. The U.S. Bureau of Labor says in the 12 months since August of 2010, there was an increase of 1,400 jobs in Macon and 800 in Albany.

A conservative radio show host from Gainesville filed paperwork Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission to run for Georgia's new congressional seat. Martha Zoller said, through a spokesman Wednesday, she will remain on the air until next spring when she qualifies as a candidate with Georgia officials. Zoller hosts a daily talk radio show on WXKT-FM, owned by Cox Radio, and is syndicated across Georgia.

A Republican state lawmaker with ties to Gov. Nathan Deal says he will run for Georgia's newest congressional seat. State Rep. Doug Collins, of Gainesville, is serving his third term in the state House and served as one of the governor's floor leaders, sponsoring Deal's proposal to revamp the HOPE scholarship.
