Georgia ports officials are asking state lawmakers for $46 million for Savannah harbor deepening in the upcoming legislative session. But it's not the only item they'll be following. Georgia Ports Authority also is interested in the results of a year-long initiative to re-write laws affecting businesses.

Savannah business leaders have made support for a little-known state agency one of their legislative priorities for the next legislative session. A $1.3 million project for Herty Advanced Materials Development Center was the area's only specific funding request this year aside from Savannah harbor expansion. The agency is a high-tech research firm helping materials manufacturers.
