The Georgia Department of Transportation is moving to purchase and preserve the boyhood home of rock n' roll pioneer "Little Richard" Penniman in Macon, one of dozens of properties GDOT is buying up to make way for the widening of Interstate 75.

State transportation planners want to adjust the route for a proposed highway connecting the Rome and Cartersville areas more directly to I-75. The changes come in response to a federal ruling this summer that an 1867 manganese mine on Dobbins Mountain has historic value, halting federal money to the roadway because it would damage the area.

A former mine in northwest Georgia could force state transportation officials to pick another route for the proposed U.S. Highway 411 connector in Bartow County. A federal official notified the state this week that the mine is historically significant and eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

Transportation officials in Georgia are unveiling a newly designed inclement weather section of their website. The new winter weather page went live Thursday. Chairman Rudy Bowen says the new webpage will help the department immediately update the public on road conditions.

A referendum on a proposed transportation sales tax will take place next summer. Some officials have expressed a desire to move the vote to the November general election. But changing the date won’t be easy.
