The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has announced warrants have been issued for nearly 100 people suspected of distributing child pornography over the Internet. GBI spokesman John Bankhead says the three-month investigation involved 47 federal, state, and local law enforcement and criminal justice agencies.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has begun a probe of spending practices in the Chatham County Coroner's Office. The GBI investigation comes after auditors for Chatham County questioned more than $200,000 in expenses filed by the Savannah area's longtime coroner, Dr. James C. Metts Jr., who resigned earlier this month, just weeks after winning re-election.

A Dawson County, Ga., prosecutor who was allegedly being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been found dead. The Times of Gainesville quotes the District 4 Florida Medical Examiner's Office in Jacksonville, Fla., as confirming the death of John G. Wilbanks Jr.

State officials say they're trying to catch up with a sex offender registry system that is seriously backlogged. Five analysts at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are currently working through 4,300 pending cases -- while also getting anywhere from 120 to 150 new cases a month.

The City of Bowdon in west Georgia is dealing with its second case of employee theft this summer. City police turned the investigation over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation when it came to light early last week. Between $20,000 and $30,000 is missing in the most-recent case. The earlier theft involved more than $150,000.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has started a probe into whether state Sen. Don Balfour committed any crimes when he illegally claimed official expense pay. GBI spokesman John Bankhead said the agency opened its investigation after receiving a request from Attorney General Sam Olens on Aug. 22.
