Its soldiers fought in both world wars and in Vietnam, and now the Army's 47th Infantry Regiment is getting a stone monument placed outside the National Infantry Museum in west Georgia. A dedication ceremony was scheduled Thursday at the museum on Fort Benning. Veterans of the unit raised $22,000 to place the marker at the museum's outdoor Walk of Honor.

Fort Benning is scheduled to welcome a new commanding general in June. The Pentagon announced Wednesday it has named Brig. Gen. Herbert R. McMaster Jr. to lead the Army post outside Columbus after he is promoted to major general.

Officials say construction to repair three military buildings damaged by a tornado should be completed by April 15, one year after the storm struck at Fort Benning. The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that work crews are repairing Building 5124 and Building 2122, both barracks.

A Fort Benning Army infantryman is suing an Atlanta-based title pawn lender for making loans he argued are illegal under the Military Lending Act. The Military Lending Act prohibits lenders from charging service members more than 36 percent interest or requiring a car title to secure a loan.

Officials at Fort Benning say a plan to expand training land at the post by 82,800 acres has been put on hold. Post officials issued a statement Thursday saying issues have arisen that make it necessary to delay a decision. The considerations include a shrinking federal budget and community concerns.

A $6.8 million project to create a gateway into Fort Benning from Interstate Highway 185 is completed. Four monuments have been erected along Victory Drive as part of the gateway to represent the Infantry School and Armor School at the Maneuver Center of Excellence.
