    Nearly 700 Ft. Stewart soldiers are getting ready to say goodbye to their families before leaving for their first deployment to Afghanistan. Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment held a ceremony Wednesday to pack the unit's battle flag, a symbol that the troops and their flag will soon be heading overseas.

    Military officials say the Army is expanding its hospital at Fort Stewart for the first time since it was completed more than three decades ago. The Savannah Morning News reports that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District broke ground on the $23.1 million expansion of Winn Army Community Hospital on Monday. It's expected to be completed in September 2013.

    Fort Stewart's top general and his command staff of about 700 soldiers have received orders to deploy to Afghanistan by late summer. Officials at the southeast Georgia Army post said Thursday that commander Maj. Gen. Robert A. Abrams and his headquarters battalion from the 3rd Infantry Division are expected to deploy in August.

    The Army says it plans to deploy about 1,600 soldiers stationed in southeast Georgia to Afghanistan later this year. The announcement came from Fort Stewart, which says it will deploy two battalions from its 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team. No other units in the division have received deployment orders.

    Georgia is lending a hand in the emergency recovery and cleanup effort from the effects of Hurricane Irene along the East Coast. Over the weekend, Fort Stewart sent nine of its Black Hawk helicopters to New York state. And Georgia Power and Georgia EMC's sent crews up the East Coast to help in restoring electricity in affected.

    The US Army is using a study involving 21,000 soldiers at Ft. Stewart to implement new mental health policies. Psychiatrists gave a group of Georgia-based soldiers additional mental health screenings before deploying to Iraq. Army psychiatrists says, incidents of mental health problems went down by about half among soldiers who got the additional screening.
