A Fort Benning Army infantryman is suing an Atlanta-based title pawn lender for making loans he argued are illegal under the Military Lending Act. The Military Lending Act prohibits lenders from charging service members more than 36 percent interest or requiring a car title to secure a loan.

Officials at Fort Benning say a plan to expand training land at the post by 82,800 acres has been put on hold. Post officials issued a statement Thursday saying issues have arisen that make it necessary to delay a decision. The considerations include a shrinking federal budget and community concerns.

A $6.8 million project to create a gateway into Fort Benning from Interstate Highway 185 is completed. Four monuments have been erected along Victory Drive as part of the gateway to represent the Infantry School and Armor School at the Maneuver Center of Excellence.

A draft report shows that Stewart County is the top choice for Fort Benning to expand its training area. A summary report released by the Army focused on Stewart County from a list of five alternatives that also considered Marion, Webster, Harris and Talbot counties in Georgia and Russell County in Alabama.

The scheduled closure of two Pratt and Whitney plants in Connecticut could be west Georgia’s gain. Right now, the aerospace parts manufacturer employs more than 450 people at its Columbus plant. Now city officials are stepping-up their efforts to add more jobs in the wake of the Connecticut news.
