Officials are now enforcing a speed limit for ships, designed to protect the whales during their winter birthing season.
Federal wildlife officials are proposing an endangered listing for a rare sunflower found in Georgia's Cherokee County. The whorled sunflower grows only in three places in the South. But it represents scores of Georgia plants in danger of dying out.

Conservation groups recently agreed with the National Marine Fisheries Management Service over new rules to protect the Pacific leatherback sea turtle. In the Atlantic, the same groups are petitioning the same officials for rules to protect the threatened Atlantic loggerhead.
Federal fish and wildlife officials have added three species of mussels to the endangered list, two of which are found in Georgia waters. The Georgia pigtoe mussel, interrupted rocksnail, and rough hornsnail now have protection for critical habitat.
