The Georgia Board of Education announced it wants federal authorities to take a closer look at how the Dougherty County School System manages federal funding. Officials say the district's financial management will likely be scrutinized for the next five years.

Joshua Murfree, head of the Dougherty County School System, will leave his post on Dec. 18. Murfree replaced former superintendent Sally Whatley in June 2010 and took over just as a state probe into standardized test cheating began.

The Dougherty County School System has received two letters from the Georgia Department of Education questioning $167,000 in Title 1 Part A expenditures from fiscal 2011. The letters seeking more documentation arrived one month after the school system reimbursed the state more than $134,000 for unallowable expenditures.

An outside tribunal is recommending four Dougherty County teachers be suspended for 60 days without pay. These are the first cases to be considered since a cheating scandal was uncovered at the southwest Georgia school district last December. Tommy Coleman, attorney for the school board, says they are accused of coaching students through the test.

The Georgia Department of Education is refusing to release ten million dollars in federal funds to Dougherty County Schools. State officials are concerned the county may be inflating how many students need free and reduced lunches.
