A new law tightening abortion restrictions in Georgia is becoming an issue in the bill sponsor’s reelection campaign. Regina Quick is running against Republican state Rep. Doug McKillip of Athens in the July 31 primary. She says the abortion measure is too intrusive.

House Speaker David Ralston gaveled out the 2012 session of the Georgia General Assembly Thursday at midnight. State lawmakers tackled some thorny issues this session, including tax reform. But the volume of bills was much lower than last year, as many lawmakers were eager to finish up early so they could hit the campaign trail.

Abortion would be illegal in most cases five months after conception under a bill the Georgia Senate will consider this week. The Senate is expected to vote Monday on legislation from Republican state Rep. Doug McKillip that would cut down on the time women can legally seek an abortion in Georgia.

A Republican state lawmaker has introduced a bill that would limit abortion in Georgia, with narrow exceptions, after a pregnancy reached 20 weeks. Currently, abortion is not permitted starting in the third trimester unless it's done to protect a woman's life and health.
