Board members of the Georgia Department of Transportation voted Thursday to move forward with the bidding process for what the DOT called the first large project funded through the Transportation Investment Act (TIA). TIA has been commonly referred to as T-SPLOST, or Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said Thursday it will work with federal authorities to reconsider a proposed route for Highway 411. The freeway would connect Rome to Interstate 75. Governor Nathan Deal said he received a letter from the National Highway Administration asking for the state to come up with alternatives.

Georgia roads will be getting more sidewalks and bike lanes. The state's transportation board voted this week to adopt a so-called "Complete Streets" policy. The plan requires bike and pedestrian accomodations on new highways depending on their size, location and traffic flow.

An endangered bat is the latest potential setback for a planned road offering better interstate access to Rome and Cartersville. The rare animal lives in nearby Gilmer County and also could be living in Bartow County where the highway would go, according to some of the project’s opponents.

A study by the state Department of Transportation found Georgia’s airports generated more than $62 billion for Georgia’s economy and 471 thousand jobs. But the lion’s share came from Hartsfield-Jackson airport, while smaller airports struggled.
