State officials have announced the Southwestern State Hospital in Thomasville will close at the end of the year. Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities officials made the announcement Wednesday. Patients being treated at the hospital will be served in various facilities throughout the region.
Advocates for the mentally ill say, they're not surprised or concerned by a delay in a plan to improve the state's mental health services. A federal judge this week granted a request to extend the time state officials have to report on their progress in a landmark two-year-old Justice Department settlement.
