Gov. Nathan Deal named six new members of the DeKalb County school board Wednesday. The move comes a week after he exercised a relatively new state law to oust six elected members over accusations of financial mismanagement.
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools is warning Clayton County school officials that the system’s accreditation is in jeopardy. In a letter to Superintendent Ed Heatley, SACS said that reports of infighting and governance issues among school board members could, “ put the school system’s current and future accreditation in jeopardy.”
The Georgia Department of Transportation authorized contracts for 16 new infrastructure improvement projects across the state Friday. The largest project award was $27.8 million to resurface 22 miles of Interstate 75 in Bartow and Gordon counties.
Savannah's Chatham County is having a record year for mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus. So far this year, the county has collected 67 mosquitoes with the virus. Health officials there say, one person has a possible case of West Nile. And the bug season isn't even over.
Georgia's Supreme Court will hear challenges to the state's charter school law Tuesday. Seven public school districts are hoping to convince the Georgia Supreme Court that Fulton County Superior Court Judge Wendy Shoob was wrong to rule in May that the Georgia Charter Schools Commission is constitutional and is not breaking any laws.
