More detailed unemployment data from the state labor department shows the Dalton area has the highest jobless rate at 11.8 percent. Metro Athens posted the lowest unemployment rate in November at 6.9 percent.

One of northwest Georgia's largest carpet companies has announced that it will close a manufacturing facility in Dalton, known for decades as the nation's carpet capital. The Daily Citizen reports that the closing of Shaw's plant on Riverbend Drive will be in the next 60 days, resulting in 270 layoffs.

In an interesting South Georgia tilt tonight, Class AAAAA power Lowndes will host Class AAA No. 5 Burke County. The two squads played early last season when the Vikings romped 36-0.

Erwin Mitchell, who served two terms in Congress and later was Dalton's city attorney for 25 years, has died at the age of 87. Mitchell, who died Tuesday at a hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn., represented Georgia in Congress as a Democrat from 1957-61. His death was confirmed by Love Funeral Home in Dalton.

Project wish lists for Georgia’s 12 transportation regions are almost complete. In 2012, voters will decide whether to pay a penny sales tax to fund the work. The process of whittling-down the lists -- and convincing voters to support them -- is a challenge for municipalities trying to serve voters locally, and support the region.

Executives of Dalton-based Shaw Industries say the carpet company is laying off employees at plants in the northwest Georgia cities of Ringgold and Eton. Shaw is one of the major employers in the Dalton area, where the economy depends heavily on firms that produce floor coverings. The Dalton area is known as the carpet capital of the world, but the industry has struggled in recent years.

The city of Dalton dedicated a Civil War historical marker today. It honors Confederate General Patrick Cleburne, who urged southern states to emancipate slaves so that they could join the Confederate Army.

On the final day of 2011 GHSA basketball, a total of six state titles were handed out. Unlike Friday there were no upsets, and most of the games were one-sided. In the Class AAA boys state title game, Columbia pulled away from Butler in the fourth quarter to win their second consecutive championship by a score of 56-37.
