Chatham County officials are recommending an increase in property taxes for a bigger jail budget. Sheriff Al St. Lawrence says he'd like to hire 52 new jail staffers to ease inmate overcrowding. Commission chairman Al Scott is pushing back against the proposal.

Cities and counties have to split local option sales taxes every 10 years based on several criteria including population. But Chatham County and its 7 municipalities couldn't reach a deal last year and opted to go to court. Three days into the trial that began Monday, both sides apparently decided they didn't want a judge to choose between their proposals.

Chatham County and its seven municipalities are going to court today to argue over how to split more than $500 million worth of tax revenue. Negotiations broke down last year over how the divide local option sales taxes - known as the LOST. Now it'll be up to a judge to decide a case that will affect property taxes and local budgets.
