US Congressman Jack Kingston says he won't be outflanked on his right. The Savannah Republican on Thursday announced he's running to replace Saxby Chambliss, who's stepping down as US Senator next year. Announcing his campaign, Kingston promised to run a campaign based on "common sense" ideas.

US Senator Saxby Chambliss' decision last week not to seek re-election is prompting several Congressmen to consider running for his seat.

Election officials in Athens-Clarke County say Charles Darwin received nearly 4,000 write-in votes after a Georgia congressman denounced evolution and other scientific theories as "lies straight from the pits of hell." Athens-Clarke County elections supervisor Gail Schrader released the figures Thursday. The write-in votes for Darwin, the 19th century naturalist considered the father of evolution, were merely symbolic as Republican Rep. Paul Broun cruised to re-election unopposed Tuesday.

The U.S. Senate is considering whether or not to fund the Federal Aviation Administration. The House of Representatives approved the bill Wednesday to continue funding. But if the Senate defeats the measure, funding for the FAA would stop on Saturday.
