US Congressman Jack Kingston says he won't be outflanked on his right. The Savannah Republican on Thursday announced he's running to replace Saxby Chambliss, who's stepping down as US Senator next year. Announcing his campaign, Kingston promised to run a campaign based on "common sense" ideas.

U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston is planning events across Georgia this week after months of speculation about whether the Savannah Republican will run for the seat of retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss. Kingston spokesman Chris Crawford confirmed Tuesday the congressman plans news conferences Thursday in Savannah and coastal Brunswick.

The President's budget proposes $1.2 million for Savannah harbor expansion. That's a small fraction of the project's $650 million total cost and the $100 million that state officials were expecting in the budget documents presented Wednesday. States are racing to deepen their harbors for bigger ships.
