Georgia Democrat John Barrow survived a Republican challenge Tuesday to his East Georgia congressional seat. Barrow of Augusta defeated Grovetown State Representative Lee Anderson 53% to 46% according to unofficial results. Anderson's GOP was counting on recently redrawn district lines to carry him to victory.

Republican Lee Anderson has conceded defeat in the state's most-closely watched Congressional race. The announcement provides some conclusion to the bitter head-to-head battle to represent Georgia's only competitive congressional district. Democratic US Representative John Barrow has not yet spoken to his supporters.

Early results are starting to trickle in in the state's most closely-watched congressional race. But the 12th District has been competitive for both parties since it was created a decade ago. And no one is expecting to go home early tonight. Barrow and Anderson are at their headquarters in Augusta and Evans, respectively.

An independent, pro-Republican political committee says it's spending about $200,000 on advertising in eastern Georgia, where the GOP is trying to oust Democratic U.S. Rep. John Barrow of Augusta.

Official election results show Republican congressional candidate Lee Anderson has defeated a GOP primary opponent by just 159 votes in their runoff election two weeks ago. State election officials certified the vote count Tuesday for the runoff in east Georgia's 12th Congressional District.

A spokesman for US Congressman John Barrow says, the Democrat is endorsing the "top of his party's ticket" for President. Avoiding the name Barack Obama, the tepid endorsement comes as Republicans try to oust the four-term incumbent by tying him in television ads to the Democratic administration. That might be a tough job since Barrow actually opposes Obama on critical issues.

Republican voters in Georgia's 12th Congressional District gave another late night to candidates hoping to defeat incumbent John Barrow in the fall. With all but absentee votes counted, the race is still too close call. Grovetown State Representative Lee Anderson led Augusta businessman Rick Allen at the end of the night by just 153 votes.

Georgia voters are heading back to the polls to choose a Republican challenger for the Deep South's last white Democratic congressman. And Republican voters in north Georgia will be heading to the polls to cast their ballots in the race for the state's newest congressional seat.
