A former member of Rep. Jack Kingston's staff is running for his old boss' House seat now that the Republican congressman has launched a U.S. Senate campaign. David Schwarz of Savannah was scheduled to announce his 2014 race for Georgia's 1st District congressional seat during a news conference Wednesday.

A State Senator from the Georgia coast on Monday announced plans to follow Jack Kingston into the U-S House. Buddy Carter of Pooler says he has the name recognition to get past what could become a crowded field of Republican candidates to run in the GOP-leaning 1st Congressional District. Kingston last week announced he's running for the US Senate, making his seat open for the first time in 20 years.

A Republican state lawmaker from the Savannah area plans to run for the U.S. House seat being vacated by longtime GOP Rep. Jack Kingston. State Sen. Buddy Carter, a pharmacist from Pooler, was scheduled to announce his campaign Monday.

US Congressman Jack Kingston says he won't be outflanked on his right. The Savannah Republican on Thursday announced he's running to replace Saxby Chambliss, who's stepping down as US Senator next year. Announcing his campaign, Kingston promised to run a campaign based on "common sense" ideas.

Rep. Jack Kingston of Savannah is joining what's turning out to be a crowded 2014 race for the U.S. Senate in Georgia. Kingston confirmed his plans Wednesday in interviews with Atlanta media outlets. He planned to officially launch his campaign Thursday in Savannah.

Three Georgia politicians have written to President Barack Obama urging him to include the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project authorization increase in his budget amendment to Congress. The president’s budget allocated just $1.28 million for the harbor expansion project — which is expected to cost $652 million.

It’s good to be a Georgia incumbent this year in the U.S. Congress. In east Georgia's hotly-contested 12th district, John Barrow held off Republican Lee Anderson Tuesday to remain the only white Blue Dog Democrat from the Deep South in Congress. In southwest Georgia's 2nd district, Democratic Rep. Sanford Bishop of Columbus has defeated a Republican challenger to win an 11th term in Congress. Bishop beat John House of Midland.

Republican Rep. Jack Kingston will face Democrat Lesli Rae Messinger in the November 6 general election for southeast Georgia's 1st Congressional District. Both are from Savannah. Messinger, a 56-year-old businesswoman, defeated Nathan Russo, a St. Simons Island retiree, in Tuesday's Democratic primary.

An appropriations bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives includes $588,000 in construction funds for the Army Corps of Engineers to advance the deepening of the Savannah Harbor. Officials said the shift from planning to implementation is critical for keeping the project on schedule.
