The Georgia Board of Regents is expected to approve the consolidation of several college campuses Tuesday. The plans have long been in the works. Higher education leaders and other state officials say the mergers will save money by streamlining administrative and academic functions. The Regents are also expected to name presidents of the four new schools.

The merger of some Georgia colleges won't be final until Tuesday, but work is already being done to promote the new names. The University System of Georgia Board of Regents voted last year to consolidate eight schools, and it is expected to give final approval Tuesday.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has given Georgia Perimeter College, a two year institution in Dunwoody, a 12 month warning to fix problems or lose accreditation. The board has reaffirmed Shorter University’s accreditation for another ten years.

The Board of the Technical College System of Georgia has selected Dr. Ivan Allen as president of Central Georgia Technical College in Macon. He will take over the larger college that will result from the merger of the Central Georgia Technical College and Middle Georgia Technical College in Warner Robins.

Members of a group pushing to keep the name ‘Augusta’ in a new consolidated university in that city say they’re confident the two sides will come to a compromise. They reject the name ‘Georgia Regents University’ chosen by administrators.

The fight over what to call the merger of two Augusta colleges isn't subsiding a month after state officials chose the name Georgia Regents University. A group of local businessmen plans to lobby Gov. Nathan Deal and University System officials to put the word "Augusta" back into the school's name.

The Virginia university founded by television preacher Pat Robertson is suing a new Georgia university, saying its new name is too similar and will create confusion. The private Regent University announced Wednesday it is filing the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Augusta.

City leaders in Augusta will decide Tuesday whether to take sides in the controversy over the name chosen for a new college being formed by merging Augusta State University and Georgia Health Sciences University.

Augusta residents upset at the name chosen for the city's new university are getting a chance to face the school's president. The president of the merged schools, Ricardo Azziz, (ah-ZEEZ) , has scheduled two forums Thursday to discuss the consolidation.
