The U.S. Department of Education is recognizing eight Georgia public schools and one private school as 2013 National Blue Ribbon Schools. State education officials announced the awards Tuesday. Nationally, 264 public and 50 private schools were recognized for their overall academic excellence or for making progress in closing the achievement gap.
The Cobb County school board has delayed a vote on whether to overturn its decision not to purchase math textbooks aligned with national standards. Board Chairman Randy Scamihorn said he wants to give board members more time to study their options. A vote was initially scheduled for Thursday.
A recent report by The Broad Foundation is recognizing six urban school districts for boosting participation and performance among black students on Advancement Placement exams. Fulton County Schools and Cobb County School District in metro Atlanta are among those half-dozen districts.
