The Georgia Historical Society will host a series of historical marker dedications around Georgia in September. They commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War that was fought from 1861 – 1865.

The discovery of East Georgia's Camp Lawton prison stockade a year ago this week was considered one of the biggest Civil War finds in decades. Georgia Southern University has unveiled a new artifact relating to the site. An archaeologist says, it goes to the heart of what it meant to live at Camp Lawton.

The city of Dalton dedicated a Civil War historical marker today. It honors Confederate General Patrick Cleburne, who urged southern states to emancipate slaves so that they could join the Confederate Army.

Communities around the state held ceremonies to honor those who have served the country in battle. Over the weekend in Marietta, there was a ceremony that named four of the unknown soliders buried in the city’s National Cemetery.

A new map of Civil War historic sites is focused on the impact of the war away from the battlefront and highlights places that illustrate the cultural and social influence of the war. The hope is to expand Civil War tourism beyond battlefields and spread the economic benefits of that tourism.
