A new map of Civil War historic sites is focused on the impact of the war away from the battlefront and highlights places that illustrate the cultural and social influence of the war. The hope is to expand Civil War tourism beyond battlefields and spread the economic benefits of that tourism.

January 1861 was a momentous time for the republic. The nation moved closer to Civil War. In Georgia, the state militia took over Ft. Pulaski in a bloodless handover that preceeded Ft. Sumter by four months.
