A coastal Georgia county is taking steps toward banning smoking in bars and other indoor venues not covered under state law. The ban goes a step further than Georgia law, which prohibits indoor smoking in restaurants and other public buildings that allow children.

The Chatham County Assessor's Office placed an IKEA furniture distribution center in the unincorporated county, but it put the center's contents in the City of Port Wentworth, according to a tax officer. That led to a huge budget shortfall for the city, and Port Wentworth slashed its budget after the error was discovered.

Authorities say a Georgia town is facing a massive budget shortfall, partly due to a tax error involving an IKEA furniture distribution center. The Savannah Morning News reports that Port Wentworth officials have laid off six employees, suspended holiday pay and taken other steps to try and make up for the shortfall.

South Carolina ports officials are walking away from a proposed port project with Georgia for the second time this year. The fight over the planned jointly-run Jasper Ocean Terminal on the Savannah River comes as federal funding for Savannah harbor deepening looks more likely. A Georgia official calls new South Carolina demands "a game."

A new survey shows, Metro Atlanta and Southeast Georgia voters favor a proposed new sales tax by a two-to-one margin. The state-wide poll by Survey USA for WXIA-TV Atlanta shows Northwest Georgia is evenly split on the tax idea, called T-SPLOST. Savannah's Chatham County Commission Chairman Pete Liakakis says, with an uncertain vote date, it's still too early for campaigning.

Narcotics agents in Savannah and Chatham County have begun hand-delivering letters to more than 200 gas stations, convenience stores and other businesses, warning them that some over-the-counter items have been banned under state and federal laws.

Georgia Supreme Court Justices say, they'll hear a case testing how much protection property owners have from claims stemming from attacks of wild animals. The case comes from the heirs of a woman eaten by an alligator in 2007 at The Landings. It's a private residential community on the marshes near Savannah.

African-American groups and some education advocates want Georgia school officials to collect better data on what they call a "pipeline" from schools to prison. One Texas study tracked over a million kids and determined that -- even accounting for poverty and other factors -- black students were much more likely than whites to receive harsher punishment for similar non-violent and non-drug-related offenses like truancy, improper dress and using cell phones.

Commissioners in Savannah's Chatham County approved nearly $300,000 to buy more mosquito-fighting pesticides. The county is fighting its worst season for West Nile virus in years and was about to run out of money for pesticides it sprays over the community using a helicopter. The additional funding will keep the aerial fight against mosquitoes going for another month.

Georgia death row inmate Troy Davis lost his life this week, but the public relations battle over his death continues. A man who stayed on the sidelines of that battle spoke publicly about the case. Spencer Lawton was the Savannah District Attorney who prosecuted the Davis case in 1991 and until this week has refused to comment on it.
