Georgia road-builders could start using a paving material made of coal ash from electric plants if a Southeast Georgia test project goes the way one utility wants. The Jacksonville energy company JEA is paving a private dirt road along the St. Mary's River in Georgia's Charlton County. Environmentalists say they can't think of a worse place to test a material that comes from coal and oil byproduct.

Georgia and Florida residents living along the St. Marys River were hit by the same tropical storm last month, but only those from one state will be eligible for a federal disaster declaration.

Dozens of people who live along the St. Mary’s River just north of the Florida border are hunkered down in flooded homes. The river is expected to remain above flood stage into next weekend.

The baseball semifinals series began Monday night, and all 10 matchups played through at least Game 1 on a stormy night in many parts of the state. While some series ended in two-game sweeps, most will be decided tomorrow.

A dozen Florida and Georgia border counties have signed an agreement making it easier for children removed from parents or guardians to be placed with relatives in the other state. The agreement among the 12 counties is expected to allow for such placements in as little as a week. It applies only to children removed because of abuse or neglect.

An official with a mining company says it's exploring in southeast Georgia's Brantley and Charlton counties for the mineral zircon and could eventually turn its attention to Glynn County. The company says mining in Brantley and Charlton counties could create 45 jobs, with a $15 million annual impact for five to 10 years.
