Albany State University's president is responding to an audit showing the school admitted hundreds of freshman who didn't meet minimum requirements. Everette Freeman, president of Albany State University told students and faculty [Friday], the university is moving quickly to prevent the problem from happening again.

The state Board of Regents voted Tuesday to merge eight of Georgia's public colleges. The goal is to save on administrative costs during a time of severe budget cuts. About 200 people attended the public meeting in Atlanta. The crowd included concerned community members from Waycross.

The state Board of Regents has approved the unprecedented merger of eight colleges to reduce costs, shrinking the university system from 35 to 31 institutions for the first time ever. University system Chancellor Hank Huckaby announced the move last week after visiting each campus to talk with administrators face-to-face.

Albany State University will award honorary degrees to several dozen civil rights activists at its graduation ceremony Saturday morning. The 32 honorees are activists from the Albany Movement in 1961. The school expelled them for participating in nonviolent protests against segregation.

The University of Georgia could vote this week on whether to oppose a policy that requires the school to turn away illegal immigrants who apply for admission. The University Council will vote Thursday on whether to ask the state Board of Regents to reverse its policy.

College boosters looking for clues as to what state universities could be merged got little help in a recently adopted set of principles. The Board of Regents approved guidelines for merging public colleges and universities to save money and improve education. Savannah and Armstrong Atlantic State Universities are perennial merger targets because they are close together.

This week the Board of Regents gave final approval for the demolition of Rutherford Hall at the University of Georgia. The 72 year old dormitory will be torn down in the spring.

Roughly 20 Georgia college students protested outside the state Board of Regents meeting Tuesday. They want the Regents to repeal their policy prohibiting undocumented students from attending Georgia’s top public universities.

Opponents of a policy that effectively bans illegal immigrants from Georgia's most competitive state colleges and universities plan to ask the university system to overturn it. Two young people are set to address a committee of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia Tuesday.
