The sheriff in Augusta say improving safety downtown should include closing a section of Riverwalk Augusta overnight, installing security cameras and creating a new tax district to increase patrols in the downtown area. Sheriff Richard Roundtree presented his recommendations to the Augusta Commission on Monday.
Augusta’s First Friday is back tonight with more security and added events. It’s been a month since a shooting had some questioning the festival’s future. But Westobou Festival organizers partnered with downtown businesses and the Friends with Benefits Fund to plan a free family-friendly area and a nighttime concert to complement the downtown First Friday.
Augusta has been debating the future of its First Friday festival after a shooting earlier this month left six people injured. Officials talked about how to continue the monthly event at a series of meetings this week.
