A task force appointed to make recommendations about Jekyll Island's future says the coastal state park may have exceeded the legal limit to how much of its land can be developed. The Jekyll Island Authority governs the island. It has asked Attorney General Sam Olens for a second opinion.

Attorney General Sam Olens must now decide whether to pursue charges against a state senator who illegally claimed expense pay. Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead said agents turned over their investigative file on state Sen. Don Balfour to Olens' office on Dec. 14. Prosecutors must decide whether to seek criminal charges against the Snellville Republican.

The state of Georgia is considering its options a day after a federal appeals court denied its request to reconsider a ruling on the state's tough law targeting illegal immigration. The Georgia attorney general's office said Tuesday it hadn't made any decision about its next step.

An analysis of more than 15 years of police records has found that officers sanctioned for misconduct in Georgia routinely keep their badges and draw pay for years as their appeals languish. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Channel 2 Action News conducted the review and reported their findings Tuesday.

State Attorney General Sam Olens has sent a letter to State School Superintendent John Barge saying local school boards can’t advocate or oppose constitutional amendments using public funds. Many school boards have been opposed to the proposed constitutional amendment on charter schools that will appear on the November ballot.

The Georgia attorney general's office has warned the Savannah city manager that the city narrowly avoided violating the state's open meetings law. Senior assistant attorney general Stefan Ritter wrote that there was an attempt to hold a City Council meeting in violation of the law.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has started a probe into whether state Sen. Don Balfour committed any crimes when he illegally claimed official expense pay. GBI spokesman John Bankhead said the agency opened its investigation after receiving a request from Attorney General Sam Olens on Aug. 22.
