Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle says that while affordable higher education is critical to the success of the state, Georgia cannot fund the education of every deserving college student. Speaking to the Atlanta Press Club on Thursday, Cagle said the HOPE scholarship "was never created to become or be an entitlement program."

Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens wants a revamped state Sunshine law that would stiffen penalties and increase enforcement. He spoke Thursday at the Atlanta Press Club about changes he has proposed. But he has no plans to suggest the legislators and the Governor be subject to the law.

Rep. John Lewis (D-5) announced Tuesday that he will seek reelection next year. The congressman made the announcement before the Atlanta press club. Elected to the US House of Representatives in 1986, Lewis will be seeking his 14th consecutive term.

Governor Nathan Deal says, Georgia should be ready to ante up if the federal government doesn't come through on funds for the Savannah harbor deepening project. Deal's comments came this week of the Atlanta Press Club. Deal says, he's hopeful but realistic when it comes to federal financing of the $500 million port expansion. Budget-cutting and anti-earmark pledges leave the state with little room.

US Senator Johnny Isakson says, he'll press Congress to fund a half-billion-dollar expansion project at the Port of Savannah. Congressional Republicans recently have been pledging to cut spending to shore up the deficit. Isakson says, there is money for the project, which state leaders see as critical to the economy
