U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson was in Savannah Wednesday to update port officials on the progress of federal funding for the Savannah harbor expansion project. Earlier in the week, he attended the Atlanta Braves opening day with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. On the prospect of port funding, he was loaded with baseball metaphors.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is hinting he has plans for a higher office. The mayor elected four years ago is seeking his second term in City Hall this year. But Morris News Service reports he said at a luncheon this week he also has "other plans" after finishing as mayor.

Atlanta's mayor said he's interested in exploring the idea of a high-speed train that would link the city with Savannah. Morris News Service reports that Mayor Kasim Reed compared the potential of a new train line to creation of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport years ago.

Atlanta's city council has approved a new ordinance aimed at cracking down on aggressive panhandling. The council's unanimous vote Monday night comes after Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed vetoed an earlier measure.

The nation's top transportation official is promising to call a meeting on the Savannah harbor deepening project. What Georgia officials really want, however, is Congressional funds. The state is seeking about $400 million in federal funds to deepen Savannah's harbor. That money has become hard to come by since the Recession.

Atlanta's mayor says he believes a $600 million project to deepen Savannah's harbor will receive a "significant appropriation" this year from Washington, where he just paid a visit to the White House. Mayor Kasim Reed declined to give specifics about why he's so optimistic. He spoke with reporters Tuesday after addressing a seminar of port officials in Savannah.

Governor Nathan Deal and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed are scheduled to be in Washington Wednesday. The bipartisan duo will be lobbying for more funds for the Savannah harbor deepening project. President Obama's most recent budget included a only small sliver of the $100 million dollars port officials want.
