Republican candidates hoping to take advantage of a newly redrawn 12th Congressional District debated in Vidalia Monday night. Rick Allen, Lee Anderson, Wright McLeod and Maria Sheffield each said that he or she was the best conservative to take on the well-financed incumbent Democrat John Barrow. The four agreed on most issues. Two sparred.

The state of Georgia and the Atlanta Regional Commission have spent about $18.7 million in outside legal fees during two decades of legal battles involving Florida and Alabama over access to drinking water. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the tab is viewed by the state and local communities as critical to protecting metro Atlanta's economy.

Sportswriter Furman Bisher has died of a massive heart attack at the age of 93. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Bisher's death on its website Sunday evening. Bisher retired in 2009 after 59 years at the newspaper, writing his final column on the same typewriter he'd used in 1950.

Voters in 39 Georgia communities will decide [Tuesday] whether to allow Sunday alcohol sales. Rome, Marietta and LaGrange are some of the municipalities voting on Sunday beer, wine and liquor sales. It's a decision already made in Savannah, where voters approved Sunday sales after state lawmakers left the matter up to local voters last year.

An outgoing member of Georgia's Department of Natural Resources board is taking aim at Governor Nathan Deal. Deal chose not to re-appoint Newnan insurance agent Warren Budd to another term on the board overseeing environmental protection. Budd says, insiders told him it's because he's in synch with environmental groups on some issues.
