    The Braves are retiring John Smoltz's number. Atlanta announced Monday that Smoltz's No. 29 will never be worn by another Braves player. Smoltz also will be inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame at Turner Field. The ceremonies will take place June 8.

    Chipper Jones will miss the start of his farewell season. Two days after Atlanta's third baseman announced this will be his final year, Braves general manager Frank Wren says the 39-year-old Jones will undergo arthroscopic surgery Monday, to repair torn meniscus in his left knee.

Wednesday night, on the final day of baseball's regular season, the Braves lost 4-3 in 13 innings to the Philidelphia Phillies in Atlanta. That gave the St. Louis Cardinals the National League Wild Card playoff spot--by virtue of their win over the Houston Astros.

    Wednesday is major league baseball's final day of the regular season, and the Atlanta Braves have fallen into a tie for the National League Wild Card playoff spot. Should the Braves and Cardinals both win, or both lose their respective games Wednesday, a one game playoff will be held Thursday in St. Louis to determine the Wild Card winner. However, if one wins today while the other loses, the winner earns the wild card outright.

    Harris Polling reports that for the third year in a row the Braves trailed only the Yankees and Red Sox in fan support. The Braves have been one of the most popular teams for over ten years, despite the fact that, according to Harris, baseball is less popular in the South. The survey also found the team as the fourth most popular choice to win this year’s World Series.
