More detailed unemployment data from the state labor department shows the Dalton area has the highest jobless rate at 11.8 percent. Metro Athens posted the lowest unemployment rate in November at 6.9 percent.

Federal funds to help the poor pay heating bills have already been exhausted across the state. Usually, the money helps thousands of poor Georgians, but Congress has not funded the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, and money has run out in Athens, Augusta, Macon and Savannah.

A meeting to discuss the possible move of the postal facility on Olympic Drive is scheduled for Wednesday at Hilsman Middle School. U.S. Postal Service officials say moving the Athens facility to Duluth would save money.

Officials in Athens are proposing a new ordinance to crack down on panhandlers in the Classic City’s downtown area. The Athens Banner-Herald reports the new ordinance would ban panhandling near banks, ATMs, sidewalk cafes, bus stops, taxis and parking meters, and while standing in line to enter a business.

A service organization employee told Athens police that antiques valued at nearly $30,000 are missing from the historic Taylor-Grady house. The Athens Banner-Herald reports that the missing antiques include a crystal vase and bowl, a Caucasian rug, a bullseye mirror and an oil painting. The Taylor-Grady House was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976. It was once the home of Henry W. Grady, and is the only home of the former Atlanta newspaper editor that still stands.

An Athens-area golf course community has been sold to a capital investment group that plans to re-launch construction of homes. Los Angeles-based Alvarez and Marsal bought the 1,300 acre The Georgia Club for a reported $10 million according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The paper reports development costs were more than $65 million.

The Grammy-winning rock group announced on its website Wednesday that it has "decided to call it a day as a band." The group composed of University of Georgia students singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills released its debut album "Murmur" in 1983. Drummer Bill Berry was also in the band but left the group in 1997.
