Army officials say 85 Georgia-based soldiers are coming home from Afghanistan ahead of schedule. The soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment based at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah were scheduled to return Tuesday after being deployed overseas for six months.

Authorities say a new radio system being installed at a Georgia Army base is frustrating hundreds of homeowners in the Augusta area who have been locked out of their garages because of jammed remote-control signals. The confusion began last week, when Fort Gordon upgraded its land-mobile radios to a 390 megahertz bandwidth, the same frequency used in automatic garage door remotes.

With the U.S. Army developing plans to cut 80,000 troops from its active-duty roster, one military expert says it will be nearly impossible for Georgia’s three major Army bases to avoid some reduction in personnel. The question is what those cuts will look like, said Gary Jones a retired Army colonel and now executive vice president for military affairs at the Columbus Chamber of Commerce.

The 3rd Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 192nd Infantry Brigade will retire its unit colors during a ceremony Monday. Three other basic training units at Fort Benning will undergo reorganization in June.

Mayor Teresa Tomlinson and the Columbus City Council are expected to approve a resolution Tuesday opposing any reductions in the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team. The move comes a week after the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce asked residents to voice their concerns on the possible cuts.

About 2,200 soldiers from Fort Stewart will be heading to Afghanistan in the coming weeks. Fort Stewart officials say the departing soldiers have been training for the deployment since July. They completed a month-long mission readiness exercise at Fort Polk, La., in November.
