Fort Stewart's top general and his command staff of about 700 soldiers have received orders to deploy to Afghanistan by late summer. Officials at the southeast Georgia Army post said Thursday that commander Maj. Gen. Robert A. Abrams and his headquarters battalion from the 3rd Infantry Division are expected to deploy in August.

The Army says it plans to deploy about 1,600 soldiers stationed in southeast Georgia to Afghanistan later this year. The announcement came from Fort Stewart, which says it will deploy two battalions from its 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team. No other units in the division have received deployment orders.

Fort-Stewart has about $515 million worth of active construction projects going on. The work represents some of the largest physical transformations the coastal-area Army base has seen. The projects also will provide new services to soldiers. The Warrior Transition Battalion this week broke ground on new living space for soldiers receiving complex medical treatment.

A Washington state military base Wednesday held a memorial service for a Georgia soldier. Joint Base Lewis-McChord honored 22-year-old Pfc. Jacob A. Dennis of Powder Springs, west of Atlanta.

A fallen soldier from Columbus is the latest to have a memorial tree planted in his honor at Fort Stewart. The Army post today dedicated an eastern redbud tree for Sgt. Johnny W. Lumpkin. He died July 2 in Iraq.
