    The US Fish and Wildlife Service has given Georgia a $1 million grant to help preserve about 6,000 acres of land on the Altamaha River. The money for Boyles Island in Wayne County is the largest of 24 projects funded nationwide in a federal program aimed.

    The Georgia Water Coalition has put the Ogeechee River in southeast Georgia at the top of a new list of dirty Georgia waterways. The coalition representing 180 groups and businesses is highlighting the Ogeechee after a massive fish kill soiled the river in May. The Altamaha is at number two on the list because of Jesup's Rayonier paper mill.

    More than half the water in Georgia is used to make electricity. From nuclear to hydro-power, just about every river in the state has some kind of power plant on its banks. But as Georgia’s population and energy needs grow, there are concerns about the health of rivers, especially in times of drought.
