The Georgia Department of Transportation says it has awarded $73.7 million in contracts for road improvements across the state. Among the projects: a new interchange on Interstate 75 south of Calhoun in Gordon County, replacing the Broad Avenue Bridge in Albany, and widening two miles of S.R. 347 near Lake Lanier in Hall County.

The Albany City Commission has voted to name its public works building after the late Johnnie Johnson, who was a local civil rights leader. The decision ends a 10-year process to honor Johnson.

Federal regulators are continuing their challenge of the sale of a hospital in southwest Georgia. Phoebe Putney Health System in Albany purchased Palmyra Medical Center in December. But the Federal Trade Commission now wants the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the sale and asked Friday for an extension of the deadline to file its hearing request.

“Snail mail” in Georgia is about to get slower. The U.S. Postal Service confirmed Thursday its plan to close more than 220 mail processing center across the United States, including eight in Georgia.

Postal workers at a south Georgia distribution center are expected to learn the fate of their jobs next week. The Albany Herald reports that Assistant Dougherty County Manager Mike McCoy participated in a meeting with the U.S. postmaster general recently, and learned that notification of workers in Albany is expected on Feb. 23.

The U.S. Marine Corps will deactivate its Albany-based band, despite the group being named Marine Band of the Year for 2011. A spokesman said the Marine Corps has had to draw down in several areas.
