The American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia last month filed a lawsuit to block Georgia’s new abortion law, which is to take effect Jan. 1. A judge is scheduled to hear arguments in the case Thursday. The law bans abortions after 20 weeks.

Georgia's highest court has ruled that a criminal defendent has a right to an interpreter at trial if he or she doesn't speak good English. The 5-to-4 decision came in the case of a Mandarin speaker convicted of cruelty to children. Annie Ling will get a new trial because she doesn't speak English well and her lawyer didn't secure an interpreter.

At least 8 people were arrested today during a protest at an immigration detention center in rural Georgia. They were demanding the closure of the Stewart County Detention Center. About 70 protesters called for the closure of the private prison in West Georgia which houses detainees for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
