The US Army is expanding its unmanned aerial vehicle program at Ft. Stewart near Savannah. The project will include construction of new facilities for what is already the largest military base on the East Coast. Officials say the buildings under construction include a training center and storage area for the Army's latest weapon in the global war on terror.

A group of Army soldiers from Fort Stewart is returning home from Afghanistan in time to spend the holiday season with their families. About 200 soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment were scheduled to arrive Tuesday after spending the past nine months deployed overseas.

Army soldiers from Fort Stewart are returning home to Georgia from their first deployment to Afghanistan. About 100 soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment were scheduled to arrive home Wednesday after a 9-month tour.

More Fort Stewart soldiers will deploy to Afghanistan this year as part of the Army's plan to shift from a combat mission to one primarily focused on advising and training Afghan forces. Some members of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team from Fort Stewart will depart between April and August.

The Army says it plans to deploy about 1,600 soldiers stationed in southeast Georgia to Afghanistan later this year. The announcement came from Fort Stewart, which says it will deploy two battalions from its 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team. No other units in the division have received deployment orders.
