Rep. Brian Strickland (R-McDonough) sponsored the bill, which prevents state schools from participating in sports associations that bar athletes from wearing religious images.

"As long as the expression does not conflict with the rules of the event or the safety of the players, it cannot be prohibited," Strickland said from the House floor.

The bill's focus is the Georgia High School Association, which runs the athletics programs at state high schools. The association currently bars athletes from wearing clothing that features any logo besides the manufacturer's.
